This large city backyard was literally divided in two by a tall retaining wall and an overgrown juniper hedge. Further, narrow, irregular basalt steps made it difficult to get to the top portion of the yard. The redesign opened up the two spaces by removing the junipers and centering a more generous stairway to give views up to the upper portion of the yard. A seat wall and bluestone patio added on the top level provide a nice location to get afternoon sun and to sit around a fire pit in the evening. The main patio area at the house level will now accommodate a dining table and barbeque. The entire backyard planting scheme was updated and kept at a scale that allows visual access between the two terraces. Lighting adds to that sense of connection at night. |
