Lakeside Residence

This front yard is exactly eleven feet wide and due to its size, even medium sized plants made it feel fairly overgrown. The idea for the front was to use some visual tricks to make it appear more spacious. Most of the plants were removed and/or reused in the backyard. The bluestone patio visually elongates the space. The new fence and entry opens up views into and out of the yard to make the space feel larger. With two exceptions, only plants that would not exceed 3’ in height were used – but these plants were chosen for year round interest, color and texture. In the back, versatility was the key to making this small space work. Flexibility of use in each space was necessary, so the hot tub was moved into the corner and a built-in bbq island and fire pit table were constructed along the side of the yard. A circular patio was inserted into the existing patio to add space for a dining table, while most of the lawn and planting areas were maintained. Additional planting areas were created to make the entry more inviting and a large laurel hedge was replaced with an airy screen to let more light into the yard.
